Sept 21: Public Forum on Tax Cap Amendment

Public Forum on Public Question 1

 Indiana Property Tax Cap Amendment

A conversation with Senator John Broden

The Referendum: The Indiana Property Tax Cap Amendment will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot in the state of Indiana as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure, if enacted by a simple majority of Indiana voters, will add property tax caps to the Indiana Constitution.

The Discussion:
What: Public Forum with Senator John Broden
An open discussion about the history, purpose, and likely consequences of the proposed tax cap amendment.
When: Tuesday, September 21, 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: Indiana University South Bend Student Activities Center, Room 225

The Audience:
Local voters, civic organizations, government officials, and reporters are welcome to join us for this public forum. Learn
about the history of the tax cap referendum. Discuss the effects of the
current property tax cap on home owners, small business owners, real
estate investors, farmers, public schools, local governments,
libraries, public transportation, and more. Share your perspective as a
taxpayer, worker, business owner, citizen, service-provider, government
official, or representative of a local citizen group.
Will
putting the tax cap into the state constitution make politicians more
accountable, or less so? Will the property tax cap guarantee lower
taxes for property owners, or simply result in new (more regressive or
less transparent) forms of taxation? Does our commitment to “no
taxation without representation” mean that decisions about taxation
should take place with representation? Can the tax cap be effective in lowering property taxes if assessed values are not capped?

We
will explore these questions and more. Bring your questions and
comments. Bring your neighbors, family, and friends. Let’s get INFORMED
before going to the polls. The referendum is coming. Be prepared! Join
the discussion. Let’s talk before we vote.
