Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males (ICSSBM) and the
Saint Joseph County Minority Health Coalition will host the 2013
INDIANA BLACK BARBERSHOP HEALTH INITIATIVE. This statewide endeavor will
educate males – particularly African-American males – about the
importance of regular testing and disease prevention.
will be given at neighborhood barbershops in eleven Indiana cities,
including South Bend. The goal is to educate African-American males
about risk factors associated with certain diseases. According to the
Indiana State Department of Health, the major health risks for
African-American males are heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.
This year, prostate cancer screenings also will be provided at no

IN SOUTH BEND, 55 ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. Medical Volunteers
will either be doing glucose checks or blood pressure screenings. Other
volunteers will be completing paperwork, directing traffic and other
duties. There will be a training for all volunteers on the evening of
April 12, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Food will be provided.
