When the Bough BreaksInfant mortality is defined as the death of a baby before his or her first birthday.  Every year, about 600 Indiana babies die before their first birthdays.  Indiana has the eighth-highest infant mortality rate in the nation.

Black infants are 2.5 times more likely to die than white infants in Indiana and 4.3 times more likely in the Northern Hospital Region of LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart & Marshall Counties, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

South Bend’s Community Wellness Partners recently received a grant from the State of Indiana to address this disproportionate rate of infant death through their program, “Speak Life: Here to Stay.”

Learn about their efforts and join a discussion about how institutional racism shapes health outcomes for Black mothers and children.
