Jan. 11: Next HHR Meeting on Housing Trust Funds

Housing is a Human Right

NEXT  HHR MEETING – THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2024 AT 6 PM
TOPIC: HOUSING TRUST FUNDS

The YWCA of North Central Indiana will host a discussion about a proposal for a Housing Trust Fund in St. Joseph County.  Housing trust funds are distinct funds established by city, county or state governments that receive ongoing dedicated sources of public funding to support the preservation and production of affordable housing and increase opportunities for individuals to access affordable homes. Anne Mannix (President of Housing Matters LLC) and Kathy Schuth (Executive Director of NNN) will lead the discussion. There is  large group of community housing activists working on the proposal and they hope to take it before the County Council toward the end of January. The timing of our HHR meeting will provide information about the proposal and allow sufficient time to organize public support for the project.

Other events of interest:

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration, Monday, January 15.  After the Community Recognition Breakfast, exhibits and vendors fill the lower level (from 9 to 4 pm). The Community Forum for Economic Justice will again have a table with materials to share and lead to conversations with members of our community. Let me know if you have information about upcoming housing issues and events for our exhibit and consider spending some time talking with those who stop at the table to learn more about safe and accessible housing.
